WXYZ-TV's "Healthy Living for Kids" Immunization Program Slated for Sunday, August 24, On Belle Isle

WXYZ-TV/Channel 7, the Detroit Department of Health, Molina Healthcare, Weatherguard Windows, and the Detroit Free Press will give thousands of Detroit metro area children a "boost" at the 26th annual "HEALTHY LIVING FOR KIDS" Sunday, August 24, 2003 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Belle Isle Casino. Since the first "Healthy Living" Immunization Program in 1977, nearly 50,000 young people have been immunized for free at this event.

Free immunizations against polio, rubella, measles, mumps, tetanus, varicella (chicken pox), diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), hepatitis B and Hib (Haemophilus influenza type B) will be provided to eligible children older than two months. Registered nurses from the Detroit Department of Health will administer the shots with the assistance of over 200 volunteers from the Health Department and WXYZ.

This year's event will include a "Children's Village" with additional services and entertainment. Services include free lead poison testing, substance abuse prevention information, and signups for the WIC feeding program and MI-Child low-cost children's health insurance.

"Healthy Living" participants will receive fitted helmets and bike safety tips compliments of the Detroit Rotary Club; storybooks and balloons courtesy of WXYZ; and Edy's dessert treats served from the Edy's VW Bug. Children and their families will also have the opportunity to meet some of their favorite WXYZ-TV personalities.

WXYZ is owned by the E.W. Scripps Company (NYSE:SSP), a diverse media concern with interests in newspaper publishing, broadcast television, national television networks, interactive media and television retailing. Scripps operates 21 daily newspapers, 10 broadcast TV stations and four cable television networks, including Home & Garden Television, Food Network, DIY-Do It Yourself Network and Fine Living. Most recently, the company acquired the Shop At Home television-retailing network. Scripps also operates Scripps Howard News Service and United Media, the worldwide licensing and syndication home of PEANUTS and DILBERT, and 31 websites, including HGTV.com, foodnetwork.com, diynetwork.com, fineliving.com and comics.com.
